Narrative:
I accompanied a mechanic aboard a lear 35A for an engine run to try to duplicate an engine problem. After a static run-up; we elected to do a high speed taxi down the runway to see if that would duplicate the problem. No flight was intended; planned; or performed. This was a ground only maintenance check. After the high speed taxi; we returned to the ramp where we discovered the upper cowling of the left engine was missing. The lower cowling had been removed prior to the run-up leaving the upper cowling only attached on the right side. The upper cowling had blown off during the high speed taxi. Upon discovery at the ramp; I immediately contacted ground advising them of the situation. Airport police did a runway check and found the departed cowling and returned it to us on the ramp. The cowling caused no damage to the aircraft upon departure. There was no damage to our aircraft; other aircraft; or property. The departed cowling sustained minor damage.
