Narrative:

Blocked in at ZZZ at XA00. Arrived at hotel at XA40 followed by an XH30 wake-up for an XI00 van to airport. At XB40 was awakened by a phone call by crew scheduling to adjust our sign-in time by 15 mins in order to have a legal 8 hour rest. XI20 sign-in time. This did nothing but make us more tired. We still needed to take an XI00 van for an XI20 sign-in and XI40 departure. Both flight crew members fell asleep during the flight due to lack of rest. We missed resetting our altimeter to 29.92 at FL180. The controller reminded us. Fatigue was a huge factor. The time spent waiting for a van from the airport to the hotel; the time checking in; and the ride back from the hotel to the airport is part of our 8 hours of rest. Our passenger on the XA40 van could not believe we were scheduled to be back on the van at XI00. 8 hours of rest really is not 8 hours of rest. This rule needs to be changed for safety sake.
