Narrative:
Cleared for errth one departure out of dtw. First officer thought this was an RNAV departure and briefed as such. Captain did not catch this during clearance brief and departure brief. Factors involved were: behind schedule; trying to do quick turn and cover many details as fast as possible. Tower assigned heading of 185 degrees and cleared us for takeoff. At 400 ft first officer called for heading and captain selected. Between 2000 ft and 3000 ft after flaps and gear are up; first officer calls for 'navigation' and captain selects navigation. Flight director commands left turn to approximately east. First officer turns aircraft to east. Approximately 1 minute later; ATC asks what heading is. Captain replies; '090 heading.' ATC amends altitude to 5000 ft (previously cleared to 10000 ft as per SID). 1 minute later ATC clears us to octas. Rest of flight occurs without incident. Captain's failure to realize first officer intentions during clearance and departure brief and then selected navigation when called for; thinking I had missed a call during airspeed adjustment.

Title: AN EMB170 CAPT RPTS NOT REALIZING THE FO BRIEFED AN RNAV DEP WHEN A SID WAS ASSIGNED. THE FO THEN ATTEMPTED TO FLY THE RNAV AS A SID AFTER TKOF.
Narrative: CLRED FOR ERRTH ONE DEP OUT OF DTW. FO THOUGHT THIS WAS AN RNAV DEP AND BRIEFED AS SUCH. CAPT DID NOT CATCH THIS DURING CLRNC BRIEF AND DEP BRIEF. FACTORS INVOLVED WERE: BEHIND SCHEDULE; TRYING TO DO QUICK TURN AND COVER MANY DETAILS AS FAST AS POSSIBLE. TWR ASSIGNED HDG OF 185 DEGS AND CLRED US FOR TKOF. AT 400 FT FO CALLED FOR HDG AND CAPT SELECTED. BETWEEN 2000 FT AND 3000 FT AFTER FLAPS AND GEAR ARE UP; FO CALLS FOR 'NAV' AND CAPT SELECTS NAV. FLT DIRECTOR COMMANDS LEFT TURN TO APPROX EAST. FO TURNS ACFT TO EAST. APPROX 1 MINUTE LATER; ATC ASKS WHAT HDG IS. CAPT REPLIES; '090 HDG.' ATC AMENDS ALT TO 5000 FT (PREVIOUSLY CLRED TO 10000 FT AS PER SID). 1 MINUTE LATER ATC CLRS US TO OCTAS. REST OF FLT OCCURS WITHOUT INCIDENT. CAPT'S FAILURE TO REALIZE FO INTENTIONS DURING CLRNC AND DEP BRIEF AND THEN SELECTED NAV WHEN CALLED FOR; THINKING I HAD MISSED A CALL DURING AIRSPD ADJUSTMENT.
