Narrative:
Our filed flight plan included an 'RNAV required' STAR into cyyz (all stars into cyyz require RNAV). We were cleared onto the arrival and began flying the published STAR then noticed that it stated RNAV required. We had a short discussion in the cockpit as to whether the DC8 could legally fly RNAV STAR procedures. We had a hunch that we couldn't legally do it. Before the end of the STAR procedure; toronto approach began vectoring us for final. Flight concluded without incident. After returning to sdf; I contacted the dispatcher and asked if DC8 crews could fly 'RNAV required' STAR's. After some research; he told me that we were not authority/authorized to fly the STAR and were required to inform ATC that we are not equipped to do the procedure. He also noted that there was no means of indicating this on the ICAO flight plan to alert ATC.
