Narrative:
I was cruising VFR in a nice clear sky; over the mountains east of albuquerque; NM. On an easterly heading over the mountain ridge I turned left to heading 040 degrees towards a nearby small air park to get some fuel. Flying at 9500 ft I cleared the turn then proceeded to turn. As I banked left I was looking down at the surface as smoke had caught my eye (I am a firefighter by career) when all of a sudden a low-wing aircraft flew right under me; no farther than 600-900 ft vertical. Frightened me for an instant as I leveled quickly and searched the sky ahead and scanned for my altitude.
