Primary Problem | Flight Crew Human Performance |
Narrative:
Crew conducted flight uneventfully until passing FL180. After briefing approach ILS to runway xx; the approach check was completed with the landing card given by engineer. Speeds were correct; however; the altimeter setting entered by the crew in all altimeters wasn't. The engineer evidently had a hard time hearing the ATIS and incorrectly wrote the setting on the card as 30.08. The actual setting was 30.48. Approximately 4 leveloffs were accomplished during the descent towards the ILS to runway xx. At no time did any controller state any discrepancies between our altitude and what we were assigned. During the approach at 500 ft RA the crew noticed a discrepancy from the RA and the barometric readings. A go around was accomplished uneventfully. An update of the WX was requested from approach and at that time the problem with the altimeter was recognized. The ILS to runway xx was then accomplished to an uneventful landing.

Title: A DC8 FLT CREW ON ILS APCH NOTICED DISCREPANCY BTWN BAROMETRIC ALTIMETER AND RADIO ALTIMETER; WHICH THEY TRACED TO IMPROPERLY COPIED ATIS AND MISSET BAROMETRIC ALTIMETER.
Narrative: CREW CONDUCTED FLT UNEVENTFULLY UNTIL PASSING FL180. AFTER BRIEFING APCH ILS TO RWY XX; THE APCH CHK WAS COMPLETED WITH THE LNDG CARD GIVEN BY ENGINEER. SPDS WERE CORRECT; HOWEVER; THE ALTIMETER SETTING ENTERED BY THE CREW IN ALL ALTIMETERS WASN'T. THE ENGINEER EVIDENTLY HAD A HARD TIME HEARING THE ATIS AND INCORRECTLY WROTE THE SETTING ON THE CARD AS 30.08. THE ACTUAL SETTING WAS 30.48. APPROX 4 LEVELOFFS WERE ACCOMPLISHED DURING THE DSCNT TOWARDS THE ILS TO RWY XX. AT NO TIME DID ANY CTLR STATE ANY DISCREPANCIES BTWN OUR ALT AND WHAT WE WERE ASSIGNED. DURING THE APCH AT 500 FT RA THE CREW NOTICED A DISCREPANCY FROM THE RA AND THE BAROMETRIC READINGS. A GAR WAS ACCOMPLISHED UNEVENTFULLY. AN UPDATE OF THE WX WAS REQUESTED FROM APCH AND AT THAT TIME THE PROB WITH THE ALTIMETER WAS RECOGNIZED. THE ILS TO RWY XX WAS THEN ACCOMPLISHED TO AN UNEVENTFUL LNDG.
