Narrative:
Climbing out of FL340 up to FL360; the aircraft experienced a sudden noise change (a high pitched whirring that sounded like a fan on a piece of electronics going bad; not loud; but noticeable) and the instantaneous smell of smoke. The smell dissipated as quickly as it began. The captain surveyed the engine instruments and did not notice anything immediately and instructed me to get up and survey the cabin to ascertain if there was anything to fire in the cabin. I found nothing and could not trace the smell. As I was searching; the captain called me back to the cockpit and pointed to the #1 engine N1 vibration data. The vibration was at 100% out of normal operation. The captain asked for; and we executed the abnormal engine vibration checklist; followed immediately by the engine shutdown in-flight checklist. The captain communicated to ATC that we were declaring an emergency and requested vectors to the nearest airport with an ILS; while I executed the checklists and pulled airport data. We were vectored to ZZZ and we asked that emergency equipment be standing by in case of any unexpected developments. We descended to 4000 ft on vectors and executed a visual approach. We landed uneventfully and taxied to the local FBO.

Title: FA50 FLT CREW EXPERIENCES ODOR AND UNUSUAL SOUNDS IN COCKPIT. TRACE BOTH TO EXCESSIVE VIBRATION IN THE L ENG. SECURE ENG; DECLARE EMER AND LAND WITHOUT INCIDENT.
Narrative: CLBING OUT OF FL340 UP TO FL360; THE ACFT EXPERIENCED A SUDDEN NOISE CHANGE (A HIGH PITCHED WHIRRING THAT SOUNDED LIKE A FAN ON A PIECE OF ELECTRONICS GOING BAD; NOT LOUD; BUT NOTICEABLE) AND THE INSTANTANEOUS SMELL OF SMOKE.
