Narrative:
The flaps did not extend when the PNF selected flaps down. He recycled the handle and still they did not extend. We verified this by looking at the leading edge devices and by the fact that the aircraft was not slowing as it should. We went missed approach and requested a long downwind to reenter the final. During the downwind I informed the flight attendants of the situation. Cabin preparation or advisory was not necessary. Notified 'dd' via ACARS. Did not declare an emergency. Fuel was not a factor. We ran the alternate extension checklist and landed normally.
