During climb out engine overheat light illuminated. Followed QRH; declared an emergency; and returned to ZZZ. Coordinated with ATC; flight attendants; passenger; company and fire and rescue to ensure everyone was informed of our intention to taxi to the gate after landing and inspection by arff.

Title: A B737-200 ENGINE OVERHEATED. THE CREW DECLARED AN EMERGENCY AND RETURN TO LAND AFTER COMPLYING WITH THE QRH.
Narrative: DURING CLBOUT ENG OVERHEAT LIGHT ILLUMINATED. FOLLOWED QRH; DECLARED AN EMER; AND RETURNED TO ZZZ. COORDINATED WITH ATC; FLT ATTENDANTS; PAX; COMPANY AND FIRE AND RESCUE TO ENSURE EVERYONE WAS INFORMED OF OUR INTENTION TO TAXI TO THE GATE AFTER LNDG AND INSPECTION BY ARFF.
