Narrative:

The chip detect annunciator came on for #1 engine. It flashed 3 times within 2 mins; and then went steady. After we brought the power lever to flight idle and as we were accomplishing the QRH procedures; the itt began to rise; the tq fluctuated; and the ng dropped to just under 20%. As the engine failed I was already talking to dispatch via comrdo. I then asked the first officer to fly and communicate with ATC. From this point on; I ran the QRH and talked with dispatch; maintenance controller; and flight attendant. We informed ATC of the situation; declared an emergency; and asked ATC for the nearest airports. We landed uneventfully and crash fire rescue equipment escorted us into the air carrier ramp where we parked.
