Narrative:
On upwind after takeoff at 400 ft; engine 1 failed. There were no aural warnings associated with the engine failure. The only indication of a problem was the sound of the engine spooling down; yaw in performance and engine 1 gauges reading for a shut down engine. I (flying pilot) called for the engine failure/fire/severe damage memory items and the first officer followed with the appropriate checklist. He then declared an emergency with ATC and we were vectored for an immediate uneventful landing. Flight attendants contacted us on the intercom and we followed the briefing checklist coordinating with the flight attendants. Also a very brief PA was made to inform passengers the reason for landing we immediately taxied to the gate for deplaning because the cabin temperature was very warm and we were concerned for passenger safety because of the heat. The landing was under max landing weight.
