Narrative:

After takeoff; I was instructed to switch over to departure control. I was unable to activate departure frequency. The departure frequency was stored in the CDU; but would not activate. After trying to troubleshoot the problem; I advised tower of my problem. Just after that transmission I discovered the problem. At that time I was 200 ft above my assigned altitude and was able to make contact with departure control. The rest of the flight was normal. The problem with the radio was a transient letter in the data pad that disabled the frequency capability of the unit. I did not enter it and I have seen this happen en route; but en route is not as busy and easily solved.
