Narrative:
We took off in an empty plane for ferry from lax. In order to meet at or below restriction on departure I pulled power back and let aircraft accelerate toward 250 KTS. We started the turn at smo 160 radial and began to climb from 3000 to 5000 ft. At that time we encountered very strong and long lasting wake turbulence in the turn. I slowed the plane; leveled the wings to regain control and then continued the turn to 220 degrees. Controller remarked that 'you should have started your turn 3 miles ago.' we replied that we had and were about to roll out on heading. I think our turn was not fast enough to meet her expectations and she perceived that we had not begun it on time due to our wake turbulence encounter. I would call the wake turbulence greater than moderate; it was very violent. I would not have thought twice about this except that the controller asked again 'did you hear me say you started your turn late?' we replied that we had started it on time and were already on the correct heading.
