Narrative:
Arriving over camdi on the civet 5 arrival into lax; ATC cleared us for the runway 25L approach. Up to this point both pilots incorrectly thought we were to expect the transition from civet for the runway 24R arrival. FMC route had been programmed for a runway 24R arrival. Captain immediately asked for a vector to course. Upon tuning course; CDI showed we were only slightly north/right of desired flight path. No altitude restrs were broken. Captain talked to socal via phone after landing. (Captain initiated phone contact; not requested by ATC.) ATC said that we had been cleared for the civet 5 and expect runway 25L arrival. Only a descend via civet 5 was read back. Both pilots missed the rest of this clearance. Great job by ATC to correct the situation quickly.
