Narrative:
While on a visual approach I received a gear disagreement warning while attempting to extend the landing gear. The nose gear was indicating that it was not down and locked. I executed a go around and had the first officer run the applicable QRH. I declared an emergency and returned for landing. After completing the QRH; the landing gear extended normally without any indications of a problem. I performed the emergency procedure in accordance with company procedures. I did not; however; call dispatch or maintenance prior to returning for landing. In the heat of the moment; I did not think that it was necessary because all system performed perfectly after completing the QRH procedure. Also; at a low altitude; 3000 ft MSL; I did not think that I could receive them on VHF. I did not think it was necessary since all system were operating correctly. In hindsight; I think that I should have taken the time to try and contact dispatch anyway. Next time I will communicate what's going on through all of the correct channels. The landing was uneventful and without incident.
