Narrative:

I was listening to the FBO's unicom radio and heard a BE20 check in 5 mi out stating he was inbound to 'campbell' airport for runway 17. Immediately; a C172 in the pattern stated he was upwind off runway 17 at 'madison' airport. The BE20 did not see the C172 on downwind and passed off his right less than 500 ft at the same altitude. The C172 maneuvered to widen out behind the king air. When on the ground; the king air pilot stated that he heard the C172 but thought he was at another airport. The problem is; ATC and all local pilots refer to this airport as 'madison' airport. This has been the case since the 1940's when the airport was constructed. Several yrs ago; the FAA charting office arbitrarily changed the 'charted' name to 'bruce campbell.' ATC was not told at the time and have successfully ignored it along with all local pilots. This is not a situation particular to this airport. I had the same problem going into the 'lantana' airport in west palm beach; fl. The pilots in the pattern (4 or more) and ATC referred to the airport as lantana where all my charts and plates called it west palm beach park; with no reference to 'lantana.' this is a problem at many mississippi airports. The FAA charting office should be encouraged to immediately stop using 'memorial' names and label airports in accordance to ATC and pilot usage. In addition; the charting office should endeavor to depict all usable landing areas. I've found 6 airports in mississippi and alabama between jackson and talladega that are private or military paved strips that are not depicted on VFR sectionals or in current GPS databases. This is an extreme safety concern as these airports can save lives in the event of an engine failure. It should not matter if the 'user' doesn't want 'his' airport depicted. This is a matter of safety. A matter of life and death. Both of the above concerns are possible 'fatal' errors that the FAA needs to remedy immediately. I do not know who to contact other than placing this safety report in your hands.

Title: PILOT REPORTS AIRBORNE CONFLICT IN THE MBO TRAFFIC PATTERN DUE TO PILOTS USING TWO DIFFERENT NAMES FOR THE SAME ARPT ON UNICOM.

Narrative: I WAS LISTENING TO THE FBO'S UNICOM RADIO AND HEARD A BE20 CHK IN 5 MI OUT STATING HE WAS INBOUND TO 'CAMPBELL' ARPT FOR RWY 17. IMMEDIATELY; A C172 IN THE PATTERN STATED HE WAS UPWIND OFF RWY 17 AT 'MADISON' ARPT. THE BE20 DID NOT SEE THE C172 ON DOWNWIND AND PASSED OFF HIS R LESS THAN 500 FT AT THE SAME ALT. THE C172 MANEUVERED TO WIDEN OUT BEHIND THE KING AIR. WHEN ON THE GND; THE KING AIR PLT STATED THAT HE HEARD THE C172 BUT THOUGHT HE WAS AT ANOTHER ARPT. THE PROB IS; ATC AND ALL LCL PLTS REFER TO THIS ARPT AS 'MADISON' ARPT. THIS HAS BEEN THE CASE SINCE THE 1940'S WHEN THE ARPT WAS CONSTRUCTED. SEVERAL YRS AGO; THE FAA CHARTING OFFICE ARBITRARILY CHANGED THE 'CHARTED' NAME TO 'BRUCE CAMPBELL.' ATC WAS NOT TOLD AT THE TIME AND HAVE SUCCESSFULLY IGNORED IT ALONG WITH ALL LCL PLTS. THIS IS NOT A SITUATION PARTICULAR TO THIS ARPT. I HAD THE SAME PROB GOING INTO THE 'LANTANA' ARPT IN WEST PALM BEACH; FL. THE PLTS IN THE PATTERN (4 OR MORE) AND ATC REFERRED TO THE ARPT AS LANTANA WHERE ALL MY CHARTS AND PLATES CALLED IT WEST PALM BEACH PARK; WITH NO REF TO 'LANTANA.' THIS IS A PROB AT MANY MISSISSIPPI ARPTS. THE FAA CHARTING OFFICE SHOULD BE ENCOURAGED TO IMMEDIATELY STOP USING 'MEMORIAL' NAMES AND LABEL ARPTS IN ACCORDANCE TO ATC AND PLT USAGE. IN ADDITION; THE CHARTING OFFICE SHOULD ENDEAVOR TO DEPICT ALL USABLE LNDG AREAS. I'VE FOUND 6 ARPTS IN MISSISSIPPI AND ALABAMA BTWN JACKSON AND TALLADEGA THAT ARE PVT OR MIL PAVED STRIPS THAT ARE NOT DEPICTED ON VFR SECTIONALS OR IN CURRENT GPS DATABASES. THIS IS AN EXTREME SAFETY CONCERN AS THESE ARPTS CAN SAVE LIVES IN THE EVENT OF AN ENG FAILURE. IT SHOULD NOT MATTER IF THE 'USER' DOESN'T WANT 'HIS' ARPT DEPICTED. THIS IS A MATTER OF SAFETY. A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH. BOTH OF THE ABOVE CONCERNS ARE POSSIBLE 'FATAL' ERRORS THAT THE FAA NEEDS TO REMEDY IMMEDIATELY. I DO NOT KNOW WHO TO CONTACT OTHER THAN PLACING THIS SAFETY RPT IN YOUR HANDS.
