Narrative:

First officer entered flight plan in the FMS on the ground. The routing was direct to brd and the gopher 5 arrival. Both pilots overlooked the fact that gollf intersection was programmed into the FMS incorrectly with a spelling of golff. The error was not discovered until approximately 10 mi east of the brd VOR. The PF followed the FMS outbound course on the FMS and not the course depicted on the gopher 5 arrival. PNF noticed the error and prompted corrective action. ATC queried the crew about the course. At that point; the captain requested direct to gollf. ATC issued a clearance directly to gollf; then the gopher 5 arrival with a descent to 9000 ft. The crew then proceeded direct gollf and began descent to 9000 ft without further incident. Both the captain and the first officer are responsible for checking that the correct flight plan is entered in the FMS. Unfortunately; both pilots overlooked the spelling of gollf intersection. PF also did not have the proper course set in the #2 VOR as a backup which would have alerted that the proper course was not being followed. Also; the gopher 5 arrival chart was not out and being viewed as it was being flown. No matter how familiar pilots become with arrs and departures; it's still important to have the chart out for viewing.

Title: SF340B FLT CREW DEVIATED FROM STAR AS A RESULT OF INCORRECTLY PROGRAMMING FIX INTO THE FMS.

Narrative: FO ENTERED FLT PLAN IN THE FMS ON THE GND. THE ROUTING WAS DIRECT TO BRD AND THE GOPHER 5 ARR. BOTH PLTS OVERLOOKED THE FACT THAT GOLLF INTXN WAS PROGRAMMED INTO THE FMS INCORRECTLY WITH A SPELLING OF GOLFF. THE ERROR WAS NOT DISCOVERED UNTIL APPROX 10 MI E OF THE BRD VOR. AT THAT POINT; THE CAPT REQUESTED DIRECT TO GOLLF. ATC ISSUED A CLRNC DIRECTLY TO GOLLF; THEN THE GOPHER 5 ARR WITH A DSCNT TO 9000 FT. THE CREW THEN PROCEEDED DIRECT GOLLF AND BEGAN DSCNT TO 9000 FT WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. BOTH THE CAPT AND THE FO ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR CHKING THAT THE CORRECT FLT PLAN IS ENTERED IN THE FMS. UNFORTUNATELY; BOTH PLTS OVERLOOKED THE SPELLING OF GOLLF INTXN. PF ALSO DID NOT HAVE THE PROPER COURSE SET IN THE #2 VOR AS A BACKUP WHICH WOULD HAVE ALERTED THAT THE PROPER COURSE WAS NOT BEING FOLLOWED. ALSO; THE GOPHER 5 ARR CHART WAS NOT OUT AND BEING VIEWED AS IT WAS BEING FLOWN. NO MATTER HOW FAMILIAR PLTS BECOME WITH ARRS AND DEPS; IT'S STILL IMPORTANT TO HAVE THE CHART OUT FOR VIEWING.
