Narrative:
Shortly after leveling off at FL360; there was a loud pop followed by the shattering of the L1 cockpit window outer pane. We then referred to the QRH window damage checklist; declared an emergency; and coordinated with ATC for a descent and diversion into ZZZ. The captain's forward vision was totally obscured. Our planned destination had thunderstorms in the local area.
