Narrative:
We were in cruise at FL390 when an EICAS caution message appeared stating right engine overheat. As captain; I xferred the flight duties to my first officer. Using the QRH checklist; I followed procedures and after retarding the right thrust lever to idle; the caution light went out and the EICAS message disappeared. I left the right engine at idle for the remainder of the flight. I declared an emergency with ATC; gave the flight attendants the information; decided to divert to ZZZ; advised dispatch of our problem and diversion decision; contacted ZZZ operations and advised of our diversion and set up for a single engine landing. I told the flight attendants to not prepare the cabin. I advised ZZZ approach to have the crash fire rescue equipment equipment to be called out. I took back control of flying duties from the first officer and the landing was uneventful. After exiting the runway; I canceled the emergency; shut down the right engine and taxied to the gate. I wrote up the problem in the logbook. I conferred with dispatch and maintenance personnel.
