Narrative:
I installed trailing edge wedge on a #3 slat and installed improper rivets on top side of slat. Slat was installed on aircraft and flew in-service before it was noticed. Maintenance control was contacted and aircraft was taken OTS and was returned to maintenance base where proper rivets were installed. I was informed about this when I returned from vacation. Supplemental information from acn 770137: I was asked at the end of the shift to inspect a #3 leading edge slat for a B757 that was having the wedge replaced. I inspected the wedge and found the fasteners were secure; but I now know that the wedge was to have solid fasteners only. I found that this wedge was to not have 'blind type' fasteners used. I gave the mechanic the ok to install the access panels. The slat was installed on an aircraft; but was removed to have the correct type fasteners reinstalled. Callback conversation with reporter acn 770137 revealed the following information: reporter stated there was some paperwork confusion in the maintenance shop where repairs to the leading edge slat assemblies are made. This slat was a hot item that was needed for another aircraft. This issue about what type of fasteners (rivets) are acceptable for attaching the trailing edge wedge to the slat spar section has been corrected.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B757-200 ACFT MECHANIC INSTALLED A TRAILING EDGE WEDGE ONTO A #3 LEADING EDGE SLAT ASSY WITH BLIND FASTENERS WHEN ONLY SOLID RIVETS ARE ALLOWED.
Narrative: I INSTALLED TRAILING EDGE WEDGE ON A #3 SLAT AND INSTALLED IMPROPER RIVETS ON TOP SIDE OF SLAT. SLAT WAS INSTALLED ON ACFT AND FLEW IN-SVC BEFORE IT WAS NOTICED. MAINT CTL WAS CONTACTED AND ACFT WAS TAKEN OTS AND WAS RETURNED TO MAINT BASE WHERE PROPER RIVETS WERE INSTALLED. I WAS INFORMED ABOUT THIS WHEN I RETURNED FROM VACATION. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 770137: I WAS ASKED AT THE END OF THE SHIFT TO INSPECT A #3 LEADING EDGE SLAT FOR A B757 THAT WAS HAVING THE WEDGE REPLACED. I INSPECTED THE WEDGE AND FOUND THE FASTENERS WERE SECURE; BUT I NOW KNOW THAT THE WEDGE WAS TO HAVE SOLID FASTENERS ONLY. I FOUND THAT THIS WEDGE WAS TO NOT HAVE 'BLIND TYPE' FASTENERS USED. I GAVE THE MECH THE OK TO INSTALL THE ACCESS PANELS. THE SLAT WAS INSTALLED ON AN ACFT; BUT WAS REMOVED TO HAVE THE CORRECT TYPE FASTENERS REINSTALLED. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR ACN 770137 REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: REPORTER STATED THERE WAS SOME PAPERWORK CONFUSION IN THE MAINT SHOP WHERE REPAIRS TO THE LEADING EDGE SLAT ASSEMBLIES ARE MADE. THIS SLAT WAS A HOT ITEM THAT WAS NEEDED FOR ANOTHER ACFT. THIS ISSUE ABOUT WHAT TYPE OF FASTENERS (RIVETS) ARE ACCEPTABLE FOR ATTACHING THE TRAILING EDGE WEDGE TO THE SLAT SPAR SECTION HAS BEEN CORRECTED.
