Narrative:

During climb out; we got an EICAS message 'E1 hydraulic pump fail.' we complied with the checklist; notified ATC and dispatch; and continued to ZZZ. At approximately the midpoint of the flight; we noted the hydraulic system 1 quantity was decreasing and entered the amber range. At that point we got an EICAS message 'hydraulic 1 lo quantity.' we complied with the checklist for this item. We were losing hydraulic system 1 and we proceeded to run the 'hydraulic system 1 fail' checklist. We declared an emergency with ATC. We continued to ZZZ and requested runway 28. We complied with the abnormal landing gear extension checklist. We exited runway 28 and requested to be towed to the gate.

Narrative: DURING CLBOUT; WE GOT AN EICAS MESSAGE 'E1 HYD PUMP FAIL.' WE COMPLIED WITH THE CHKLIST; NOTIFIED ATC AND DISPATCH; AND CONTINUED TO ZZZ. AT APPROX THE MIDPOINT OF THE FLT; WE NOTED THE HYD SYS 1 QUANTITY WAS DECREASING AND ENTERED THE AMBER RANGE. AT THAT POINT WE GOT AN EICAS MESSAGE 'HYD 1 LO QUANTITY.' WE COMPLIED WITH THE ABNORMAL LNDG GEAR EXTENSION CHKLIST. WE EXITED RWY 28 AND REQUESTED TO BE TOWED TO THE GATE.
