Narrative:

During vectoring for the visual approach to runway 1R; we were established on a 010 degree heading at 4000 ft. We picked up a TA from an aircraft at our 10 O'clock position and 5 mi. ATC called out our location to the king air who was in the climb to 3500 ft. We did not have traffic in sight. The TA switched to an RA and initially gave us an aural 'descend; descend now;' however; the red pitch avoidance area on the pfd indicated climb. The first officer disconnected the autoplt and initiated a climb. The relief pilot saw the king air as it passed beneath us. He estimated that we cleared the traffic by 400 ft. We climbed approximately 400 ft during the RA event. After the 'clear of conflict' aural indication; the captain notified approach that we had responded to the RA; because we did not have the conflicting traffic in sight.

Title: B777 ON VECTORS FOR VISUAL APCH TO SFO RWY 1L AT 4000 FT EXPERIENCED TCAS RA WITH VFR TFC CLIMBING TO 3500 FT; ATC ISSUED TFC INFO.

Narrative: DURING VECTORING FOR THE VISUAL APCH TO RWY 1R; WE WERE ESTABLISHED ON A 010 DEG HDG AT 4000 FT. WE PICKED UP A TA FROM AN ACFT AT OUR 10 O'CLOCK POS AND 5 MI. ATC CALLED OUT OUR LOCATION TO THE KING AIR WHO WAS IN THE CLB TO 3500 FT. WE DID NOT HAVE TFC IN SIGHT. THE TA SWITCHED TO AN RA AND INITIALLY GAVE US AN AURAL 'DSND; DSND NOW;' HOWEVER; THE RED PITCH AVOIDANCE AREA ON THE PFD INDICATED CLB. THE FO DISCONNECTED THE AUTOPLT AND INITIATED A CLB. THE RELIEF PLT SAW THE KING AIR AS IT PASSED BENEATH US. HE ESTIMATED THAT WE CLRED THE TFC BY 400 FT. WE CLBED APPROX 400 FT DURING THE RA EVENT. AFTER THE 'CLR OF CONFLICT' AURAL INDICATION; THE CAPT NOTIFIED APCH THAT WE HAD RESPONDED TO THE RA; BECAUSE WE DID NOT HAVE THE CONFLICTING TFC IN SIGHT.
