Narrative:
Needed deicing at dfw for early morning departure. Captain opened left aft galley door and inspected left engine inlet. Free from ice. Started left engine normally and had normal taxi to spot xx for deicing. Maintenance inspected engines with ladders and flashlights and determined we had blade damage in the left engine. Cleared right engine; started right engine and returned to gate. Suspect previous damage; because captain took the time to closely inspect the left engine inlet.
