Narrative:
Level at FL380 talking to ARTCC radio on HF; requested a deviation for a strong line of thunderstorms. After about 5 mins; requested again saying I would need to use emergency authority/authorized to go 20 mi west of storms soon. Radio said stand by and she would try again. Approaching WX; I called; declared an emergency; and started to go around the storms. After a few mins; she came back with a clearance to FL370 and ok to deviate.
