Narrative:
During crew change; crew oxygen low EICAS message came on and oxygen indicated 0. First officer was wearing mask and had normal inflation and pressure. While PF's reviewed checklists; relief first officer checked crew bottle in east&east compartment and indicated that crew oxygen bottle pressure was 1500 pounds and valve was safetied open. We contacted dispatch and maintenance for any additional advice. The result was a probable indicator problem and the item was logged. One concern was that the checklist does not address possible indicator problem and the other indications such as normal mask inflation and mask pressure. Our investigation was accomplished only from past experience. If we followed the checklist by word we would have made high dive and diverted. The status page later showed fluctuating oxygen pressure.
