Narrative:

I called for flaps 9 degrees. The captain placed the selector handle in the flaps 9 in the detent; moments later the EICAS indicated a master caution with 'flaps fail' displayed on the EICAS screen. We ran the QRH checklist as per the SOP's and policy. We communicated with dispatch; advised the flight attendant and declared an emergency. We requested and got the longest runway and were met by the emergency equipment on the ground. After verifying the brake temperature we taxied to the gate without further incident.
