Narrative:
I was going for an early evening flight after work; preflted the C182; started; checked ATIS and taxied out of hangar row. I contacted ground control and was told to taxi to runway 21L. There are 2 areas that are used for run-up for runway 21L. I usually use the area beyond the parallel taxiway; but today I used the one before the taxiway. My preflight inspection complete; I contacted felts tower and was cleared for takeoff on runway 21L. I departed the run-up area; turned left; and started my takeoff roll. Within 100 ft; I recognized something was wrong: the 'runway' was narrow; and there was a solid yellow line rather than a broken white line. I was taking off on the parallel taxiway! I certainly could have taken off on that surface; since it runs the whole length of the runway; and there was no conflicting traffic; but not a good idea! I stopped within another 100 ft; taxied back to runway 21L and departed without incident. The root cause was inadequate attention; but it was a setup because I used the different run-up area.
