Narrative:
Top of climb at FL20 on the departure from ZZZ. Flight attendants were seated until about FL230 for WX in the area. Seat belt sign was on. WX radar indicated light rain (green). With no change on the radar hit heavy rain and abrupt moderate turbulence. First officer took control of the airplane which lost about 150 ft and smoothly flew it back on altitude. I announce over the PA for flight attendants to take a seat. Flight attendants X and Y were in their rear jumpseats but not buckled in yet. They left the cart and returned to their jumpseats. They were tossed out of their jumseats. The cart was thrown in the air and soda bins were spilled on the floor. The event lasted no more than a min. They were bruised but reported no other injuries to themselves or any passenger. An in-flight supervisor met the plane. The flight attendants were able to leave the plane themselves. No service was performed on the flight. Ask for and received clearance for a lower altitude. The rest of the flight was uneventful.
