Narrative:
While deviating around some thunderstorms; ZDV asked us if we were proceeding direct oma as previously cleared. I responded 'no; deviating around WX.' he said we needed to ask permission to deviate and I advised him we were cleared to deviate from the previous controller/frequency. He then told me we should have gotten a clearance from him; even if the previous controller issued the clearance to deviate. I politely told him the previous controller should have advised him we were deviating. Better coordination between ATC controllers.
