Narrative:
I was cleared to takeoff (runway 4R in bos as we did not have numbers for runway 33L; the runway in use) and assigned 4000 ft; from my previous 5000 ft initial altitude. First officer and I ran checklists and commenced takeoff power-up. A few seconds later we noticed an MD80 style aircraft taxiing up to the runway; I commented that he didn't look as if he was going to stop; he did not. We (my first officer and I) called out 'abort' and aborted takeoff with no incident. I do not recall our speed; but it could not have been too fast. At the same time we called to abort; tower called us and canceled our takeoff clearance. We were initially told to hold there on the runway. We were then cleared to turn left on taxiway P to taxiway east (I think it was) hold short runway 4L. After a few mins we were given clearance back towards runway 4R; I first contacted dispatch to make sure they were aware of the incident and see if anything was 'officially' required at that point. Taxied to runway 4R and took off; continued flight without incident.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN EMB-145 REJECTED THEIR TAKEOFF AT BOS WHEN AN MD-80 ENTERED THE RUNWAY AHEAD OF THEM.
Narrative: I WAS CLRED TO TKOF (RWY 4R IN BOS AS WE DID NOT HAVE NUMBERS FOR RWY 33L; THE RWY IN USE) AND ASSIGNED 4000 FT; FROM MY PREVIOUS 5000 FT INITIAL ALT. FO AND I RAN CHKLISTS AND COMMENCED TKOF PWR-UP. A FEW SECONDS LATER WE NOTICED AN MD80 STYLE ACFT TAXIING UP TO THE RWY; I COMMENTED THAT HE DIDN'T LOOK AS IF HE WAS GOING TO STOP; HE DID NOT. WE (MY FO AND I) CALLED OUT 'ABORT' AND ABORTED TKOF WITH NO INCIDENT. I DO NOT RECALL OUR SPD; BUT IT COULD NOT HAVE BEEN TOO FAST. AT THE SAME TIME WE CALLED TO ABORT; TWR CALLED US AND CANCELED OUR TKOF CLRNC. WE WERE INITIALLY TOLD TO HOLD THERE ON THE RWY. WE WERE THEN CLRED TO TURN L ON TXWY P TO TXWY E (I THINK IT WAS) HOLD SHORT RWY 4L. AFTER A FEW MINS WE WERE GIVEN CLRNC BACK TOWARDS RWY 4R; I FIRST CONTACTED DISPATCH TO MAKE SURE THEY WERE AWARE OF THE INCIDENT AND SEE IF ANYTHING WAS 'OFFICIALLY' REQUIRED AT THAT POINT. TAXIED TO RWY 4R AND TOOK OFF; CONTINUED FLT WITHOUT INCIDENT.
