Narrative:
Our departure from slc was the twin falls 1 RNAV. The altitude depicted on the departure is maintain FL230. Approaching runway 34L; tower tells us to fly runway heading due to thunderstorms to the west. After takeoff; tower switches us to departure. We contact departure control stating our altitude and climbing to FL230. Departure says roger; tells us about some WX; and says when able cleared to abc (fix) on the twin falls departure. At about 8000 ft; departure says 'air carrier XXX; I'm just curious; did tower assign you FL230?' I replied 'no.' then he said 'did you receive an automated departure?' I said 'yes we did.' then he said 'do you mind checking to see if there was an altitude on it?' I looked on the pre departure clearance and saw that in fact the altitude was 10000 ft and let him know this. He said 'yeah; they normally want you at 10000 ft for incoming traffic.' at this point; I looked at the altimeter and it was just passing 10600 ft. Then departure told us to switch to ZLC and have a nice flight. I repeated the switch and said 'you have a good night too.'
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B737 DEPARTED ON THE SLC TWIN FALLS ONE RNAV WITH A 10000 FT ALT ASSIGNMENT. ATC CALLED THE CREW AFTER THEY FAILED TO LEVEL AT 10000 FT.
Narrative: OUR DEP FROM SLC WAS THE TWIN FALLS 1 RNAV. THE ALT DEPICTED ON THE DEP IS MAINTAIN FL230. APCHING RWY 34L; TWR TELLS US TO FLY RWY HDG DUE TO TSTMS TO THE W. AFTER TKOF; TWR SWITCHES US TO DEP. WE CONTACT DEP CTL STATING OUR ALT AND CLBING TO FL230. DEP SAYS ROGER; TELLS US ABOUT SOME WX; AND SAYS WHEN ABLE CLRED TO ABC (FIX) ON THE TWIN FALLS DEP. AT ABOUT 8000 FT; DEP SAYS 'ACR XXX; I'M JUST CURIOUS; DID TWR ASSIGN YOU FL230?' I REPLIED 'NO.' THEN HE SAID 'DID YOU RECEIVE AN AUTOMATED DEP?' I SAID 'YES WE DID.' THEN HE SAID 'DO YOU MIND CHKING TO SEE IF THERE WAS AN ALT ON IT?' I LOOKED ON THE PDC AND SAW THAT IN FACT THE ALT WAS 10000 FT AND LET HIM KNOW THIS. HE SAID 'YEAH; THEY NORMALLY WANT YOU AT 10000 FT FOR INCOMING TFC.' AT THIS POINT; I LOOKED AT THE ALTIMETER AND IT WAS JUST PASSING 10600 FT. THEN DEP TOLD US TO SWITCH TO ZLC AND HAVE A NICE FLT. I REPEATED THE SWITCH AND SAID 'YOU HAVE A GOOD NIGHT TOO.'
