Narrative:
Left generator drive illuminated on takeoff. Generator disconnected per FM. Consulted with dispatch and maintenance. Divert to ZZZ1 required declaring an emergency so as to gain frequency access prior to entering ETOPS airspace. Overweight landing ZZZ1. Supplemental information from acn 805390: approximately 10 mins after takeoff out of ZZZ I was called by the captain and told that we had lost a generator and would not be able to continue to destination and would most likely be going to ZZZ1 to see if it could be repaired. We had about 20 mins but was not considered an emergency.
