Narrative:
After initial climb out my heading indicator light illuminated. Soon I lost my flight director bars from the ADI. Shortly after; we experienced a loud banging sound coming from the captain's side below his windscreen. I reset my heading failure button and then tried to put the autoplt on. It remained engaged for a min; but then kicked off again followed by another loud banging sound again from the captain's side. We asked to level off and the captain declared an emergency with departure control. Descended to ZZZ to a successful landing. Plane was taken OTS. I followed up on the write-up to see they had replaced the vg #2; and it operations checked normal. There was no mention about a fix for the loud banging sound we experienced in the correction side of our write-up.
