Narrative:
Company flight planned this flight over a route that this aircraft was not equipped for. We needed HF for communication. Captain and first officer did not realize this until they were out of communication. This was a new route for this crew, so they thought that the route was ok to fly because the company had filed this route. Crew was unfamiliar with international procedure because company did not train them or brief them about flying in this environment. Loss of communication with ATC on A-25 between manna and grann was re-established by contacting a flight on 121.5 and he relayed for us until we could talk to san juan. I discovered the error when I came up to the cockpit to see how the flight was progressing. The captain told me he was unable to talk to anyone, I suggested he try to contact someone on 121.5.
