Narrative:
After following the teb noise abatement procedures for runway 24; I leveled at 1500 ft MSL and turned to a heading of 280. I reset the altitude preselector to 2000 ft MSL as published on the SID. I was to stay at 1500 ft MSL until 4.5 DME from teb VOR. The altitude pre-selector was engaged but the altitude hold light had not captured by the time I re-selected the 2000 ft MSL step up. Thus the aircraft climbed to 2000 ft MSL; 1.1 mile or 20 seconds too early of the 4.5 DME distance specified on the SID. Controller asked my altitude and advised me that the SID stated 1500 ft MSL until 4.5 which I confirmed. He initially advised me to return to 1500 ft MSL then decided to give me a 220 heading and climb to 6000 ft MSL. No further communication was made; handed off to next controller.
