Narrative:
Aircraft was a scheduled passenger flight; departing the main terminal. I cleared him to 'taxi to runway 10 via alpha' which he read back. I looked away and when I looked back; the aircraft was holding short of runway 10 at A3 which is at midfield and at the edge of the terminal ramp. He had taxied maybe 300 ft to A3 instead of 1 mi to A7. I then cleared him to enter the runway and back-taxi to A4 to rejoin taxiway a to the end of the runway (A7). Today; there happened to be a taxiway closure of taxiway a starting at A3 and extending east from there. This was at the edge of where the aircraft needed to taxi; but not really in his way. This is not an uncommon occurrence. I have seen probably 5 scheduled passenger flts with professional crews come out of the terminal ramp and go to this intersection at the middle of the runway. I don't know why this intersection is misleading them; but apparently it is. No runway incursion. The aircraft did stop at the hold short line; just at the wrong place.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: MGM CONTROLLER DESCRIBED EVENT WHEN AIR CARRIER WAS INSTRUCTED TO TAXI VIA TXWY A TO RUNWAY 10 BUT TAXIED TO TXWY A3 APPROXIMATELY AT THE MID FIELD POINT. REPORTER CLAIMING EVENT WAS NOT UNCOMMON.
Narrative: ACFT WAS A SCHEDULED PAX FLT; DEPARTING THE MAIN TERMINAL. I CLRED HIM TO 'TAXI TO RWY 10 VIA ALPHA' WHICH HE READ BACK. I LOOKED AWAY AND WHEN I LOOKED BACK; THE ACFT WAS HOLDING SHORT OF RWY 10 AT A3 WHICH IS AT MIDFIELD AND AT THE EDGE OF THE TERMINAL RAMP. HE HAD TAXIED MAYBE 300 FT TO A3 INSTEAD OF 1 MI TO A7. I THEN CLRED HIM TO ENTER THE RWY AND BACK-TAXI TO A4 TO REJOIN TXWY A TO THE END OF THE RWY (A7). TODAY; THERE HAPPENED TO BE A TXWY CLOSURE OF TXWY A STARTING AT A3 AND EXTENDING E FROM THERE. THIS WAS AT THE EDGE OF WHERE THE ACFT NEEDED TO TAXI; BUT NOT REALLY IN HIS WAY. THIS IS NOT AN UNCOMMON OCCURRENCE. I HAVE SEEN PROBABLY 5 SCHEDULED PAX FLTS WITH PROFESSIONAL CREWS COME OUT OF THE TERMINAL RAMP AND GO TO THIS INTXN AT THE MIDDLE OF THE RWY. I DON'T KNOW WHY THIS INTXN IS MISLEADING THEM; BUT APPARENTLY IT IS. NO RWY INCURSION. THE ACFT DID STOP AT THE HOLD SHORT LINE; JUST AT THE WRONG PLACE.
