Narrative:
The original flight plan from sfo-dfw included las vegas, NM as a part of the filed route. A re-file was requested airborne, 'direct beatty, direct las vegas, direct wichita falls, on course.' we were requesting bty, lvs, sps VOR's. Lax center cleared us 'direct lidat, direct beatty, direct las vegas, direct wichita falls.' just east of beatty VOR, lax center gave us a right turn to a heading of 180 degrees and said that we were getting close to a hot restr area. Lax center said that our clearance was over las vegas, nv. I seem to remember another NASA report of a flight having a similar conflict with the 2 las vegas VOR's (lvs, las). I realize that there are many navigation fixes around the world that have the same name. The 2 las vegas VOR's are located in heavily traveled airspace. I suggest that the las vegas, NM VOR name be changed.

Title: ACR WDB DEVIATION FROM CLRNC ROUTE. FLT CREW CONFUSION BETWEEN LAS AND LVS WHEN GIVEN A REQUESTED AMENDED CLRNC.
Narrative: THE ORIGINAL FLT PLAN FROM SFO-DFW INCLUDED LAS VEGAS, NM AS A PART OF THE FILED ROUTE. A RE-FILE WAS REQUESTED AIRBORNE, 'DIRECT BEATTY, DIRECT LAS VEGAS, DIRECT WICHITA FALLS, ON COURSE.' WE WERE REQUESTING BTY, LVS, SPS VOR'S. LAX CENTER CLRED US 'DIRECT LIDAT, DIRECT BEATTY, DIRECT LAS VEGAS, DIRECT WICHITA FALLS.' JUST E OF BEATTY VOR, LAX CENTER GAVE US A RIGHT TURN TO A HDG OF 180 DEGS AND SAID THAT WE WERE GETTING CLOSE TO A HOT RESTR AREA. LAX CENTER SAID THAT OUR CLRNC WAS OVER LAS VEGAS, NV. I SEEM TO REMEMBER ANOTHER NASA RPT OF A FLT HAVING A SIMILAR CONFLICT WITH THE 2 LAS VEGAS VOR'S (LVS, LAS). I REALIZE THAT THERE ARE MANY NAV FIXES AROUND THE WORLD THAT HAVE THE SAME NAME. THE 2 LAS VEGAS VOR'S ARE LOCATED IN HEAVILY TRAVELED AIRSPACE. I SUGGEST THAT THE LAS VEGAS, NM VOR NAME BE CHANGED.
