During cruise EICAS message 'lavatory smoke' displayed. Flight attendant confirmed that 4 or 5 passengers smelled smoke and that there was haze in the cabin. We declared an emergency and diverted.

Title: E145 diverted to nearest airport following receipt of an EICAS 'LAV SMOKE' message; confirmed as real by the Flight Attendant and passengers.
