Narrative:
At sav we have many radar problems; most are repaired promptly. This situation is the worst I have ever seen. A 40-year-old radar equipment system (ASR 8; ant; ARTS ii); analog and unable to track many targets; needs replacing as soon as possible. The military has a state-of-the-art radar ant 25 NM northeast and 25 NM southwest of sav and if sav had up-to-date digital radar processing equipment we could use them. The radar problems at sav are becoming more numerous. Most are not reported by FAA officials. Had this situation happened during sav busy traffic periods instead of a slow day at dawn; there would have been more delays and a serious safety crisis would have ensued.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: SAV Controller described radar failure; claiming current analog equipment is not compatible with closely located military digital radar; which could improve SAV radar's tracking performance.
