Narrative:
We were issued taxi instructions to runway 7R via taxiways B and a. Taxiway B is the outer edge of the ramp area. When I looked at our taxi diagram; it appeared that taxiway B ended at a deice pad with no connection to taxiway a at the end. I taxied the aircraft from the ramp and entered taxiway a at intersection A1 believing that the few feet of taxiing on taxiway B was what the controller was referring to in our clearance. Once on taxiway a; the controller pointed out that taxiway B was to our right and to continue via taxiway a to the runway. Upon double-checking the airport diagram; I noted that taxiway B did indeed join taxiway a; but the junction was obscured from view by the deicing box on our charts. In the future; I will more carefully examine the taxi diagram if there is any writing that obscures my taxi path on the chart.
