Narrative:

One hour into the flight the captain sent me an ACARS message that said; 'heads up...you guys are planning [nose number] in rvsm airspace...what gives?' upon receiving this message I re-evaluated the MEL item (ir 2 inoperative) and saw the restriction 'rvsm operations not authorized;' which I had previously missed. Meanwhile the flight had already been at FL380 vs. FL280 for one hour. The crew had enough fuel onboard to descend to FL280 for the remainder of the flight and landed uneventfully.
