Narrative:
Flight departed late due to maintenance placarding left engine generator inoperative; generator switch off and CSD disconnected per MEL item 24-01. With APU powering left generator bus; departed. At FL310; master caution and APU gen off lights illuminated at APU shutdown with no faults noted. Attempted to restart APU without success. 130NM from departure airport; declared and emergency with center for clearance back. Upon turning back west; saw cloud deck back toward the airport and remembered cloud deck on departure. Got favorable weather from ATC; and with visual on the field; good weather; the captain was experienced into this airport changed divert. Completed overweight landing approximately XA00 local time; 1 hour after departure and 15 minutes after declaring emergency with ATC. Landing and taxi in were uneventful. This was first sequence that I have flown with captain; but not the first leg.

Title: An MD80 departed with an engine driven generator MEL'ed inoperative. After the APU shutdown and would not restart in flight; the crew declared an emergency with a single generator and diverted to a nearby airport.
