Narrative:
On descent into pdx at FL240 a slight shudder was felt and the red gear door light on the forward panel and the second officer left main gear door light illuminated. We reduced airspeed from 340 KTS to 240-250 KTS and raised the gear handle from the off to the up position. This action had no effect on the problem. On approach the gear handle was lowered to the down position and the left main gear unsafe light came on. The gear handle was cycled but the unsafe light remained. System a hydraulic fluid was leaking so system a hydraulics were shut down. One gallon remained. A flyby pdx tower at 1000' AGL confirmed the left main gear door was only partially opened and the left main gear was not down. During holding we briefed the F/a's and the passenger. The captain talked with the company maintenance coordinator, the second officer worked all applicable checklists with the captain while I flew the aircraft in the holding pattern. Neither manual gear extension nor abrupt pull ups were successful at lowering the left main gear. An emergency was declared and emergency equipment was requested. Runway 20 at pdx was selected because the wind was 220 degrees at 18 G 25 and we felt a right crosswind was most desirable. A system hydraulics were restored on short final. A 40 degree flap landing was made. The T/D was normal and the captain was able to hold the left wing off until slowing through 90 KTS. The left wing settled gently and there was no fire and no injuries. The aircraft was evacuated from the right side. In summary, everyone from ATC, the pdx fire and rescue crews, the company operations personnel did a fabulous job. It is a pleasure to work with such professionals.

Title: LGT LANDED WITH LEFT MAIN GEAR NOT EXTENDED.
Narrative: ON DSCNT INTO PDX AT FL240 A SLIGHT SHUDDER WAS FELT AND THE RED GEAR DOOR LIGHT ON THE FORWARD PANEL AND THE S/O LEFT MAIN GEAR DOOR LIGHT ILLUMINATED. WE REDUCED AIRSPD FROM 340 KTS TO 240-250 KTS AND RAISED THE GEAR HANDLE FROM THE OFF TO THE UP POS. THIS ACTION HAD NO EFFECT ON THE PROB. ON APCH THE GEAR HANDLE WAS LOWERED TO THE DOWN POS AND THE LEFT MAIN GEAR UNSAFE LIGHT CAME ON. THE GEAR HANDLE WAS CYCLED BUT THE UNSAFE LIGHT REMAINED. SYS A HYD FLUID WAS LEAKING SO SYS A HYDS WERE SHUT DOWN. ONE GALLON REMAINED. A FLYBY PDX TWR AT 1000' AGL CONFIRMED THE LEFT MAIN GEAR DOOR WAS ONLY PARTIALLY OPENED AND THE LEFT MAIN GEAR WAS NOT DOWN. DURING HOLDING WE BRIEFED THE F/A'S AND THE PAX. THE CAPT TALKED WITH THE COMPANY MAINT COORDINATOR, THE S/O WORKED ALL APPLICABLE CHKLISTS WITH THE CAPT WHILE I FLEW THE ACFT IN THE HOLDING PATTERN. NEITHER MANUAL GEAR EXTENSION NOR ABRUPT PULL UPS WERE SUCCESSFUL AT LOWERING THE LEFT MAIN GEAR. AN EMER WAS DECLARED AND EMER EQUIP WAS REQUESTED. RWY 20 AT PDX WAS SELECTED BECAUSE THE WIND WAS 220 DEGS AT 18 G 25 AND WE FELT A RIGHT XWIND WAS MOST DESIRABLE. A SYS HYDS WERE RESTORED ON SHORT FINAL. A 40 DEG FLAP LNDG WAS MADE. THE T/D WAS NORMAL AND THE CAPT WAS ABLE TO HOLD THE LEFT WING OFF UNTIL SLOWING THROUGH 90 KTS. THE LEFT WING SETTLED GENTLY AND THERE WAS NO FIRE AND NO INJURIES. THE ACFT WAS EVACUATED FROM THE RIGHT SIDE. IN SUMMARY, EVERYONE FROM ATC, THE PDX FIRE AND RESCUE CREWS, THE COMPANY OPS PERSONNEL DID A FABULOUS JOB. IT IS A PLEASURE TO WORK WITH SUCH PROFESSIONALS.
