Narrative:
On a visual approach I selected flaps 1 on first officer's request and immediately thereafter received a le slat disagree EICAS message; associated le lights. First officer assumed flying and radio duties and he requested vectors off of the approach so I could run the appropriate checklist. After checklist completion; I advised flight attendant's of our condition and advised them that I planned on normal approach; landing and taxi to the gate. I then made a PA stating the same. I then advised dispatch of our situation and declared an emergency with approach. Landing configuration was 20 flaps as per checklist and normal landing and taxi were made to gate.
