Narrative:

I performed a aileron lube on left-hand wing on a B737-800. While performing this task in the rain; approx 23:30; I had to use an extra flashlight to perform work. After I did the paper work I cleaned my tools and noticed my small flashlight was missing. I promptly contacted my lead and the supervisor prior to the aircraft pushing. I attempted to stop the push three more times; I then jumped in a lift truck to stop the pushback by driving out to the alleyway. The aircraft sat in the alleyway for 5 to 10 minutes; so I thought they had been contacted. All this time the maintenance coordinator and maintenance controller were attempting to contact the (flight) crew. They were able to contact them only after they started taxiing. Aircraft then returned to the gate. I generated log page write-up and removed flashlight.
