Had engine trouble at around 10;000 ft near conifer; co. Was able to restart and found that I was at about 9000 ft now which was only a few hundred feet above the ground. Could not explain reason for failure. Could not duplicate. Possible water in tanks or mixture too lean.

Title: C172 pilot reports engine trouble over the Rocky Mountains. A thousand feet is lost before the engine is successfully restarted a few hundred feet above terrain.
