Narrative:
On visual approach to runway 23 in clt; ATC vectored our aircraft 4 miles in trail of a 737. After the 737 landed; ATC placed another aircraft into position and hold on runway 23. The 737 rolled to and exited at taxiway F; and once the position and hold aircraft was cleared for takeoff we were within 1000' AGL. We executed the go-around at 400' AGL because the aircraft on the takeoff roll had not yet passed the 1000' runway markings. We notified the tower of the go-around to which they promptly replied; 'why are you going around? You could have made it.' cause: short separation between our aircraft and the aircraft in front of us on the approach; and the ATC tower placing a aircraft between us for departure.'
