Narrative:
Approaching a gate with B757 annunciated on the self parking guidance; we were moving slowly because we felt we were getting very close to the tug. At about this time the ground crew chief urgently signaled us to stop. The self parking guidance showed 12 feet left to go; when in fact the ground crew had to push us back 8 feet to position us on the 757 stop line. Fortunately; there was no tow bar attached to the tug. The crew chief indicated later; that if there had been a tow bar attached; we may have hit it. This is obviously a dangerous situation that needs to be investigated; and corrected.
