Narrative:

Inspector noticed that the placard on the right emergency door stated left hand on the placard. After contacting maintenance there was confusion on whether the doors were interchangeable or not and possibly that the placards were placed in the wrong doors. After further investigation it appears that some of the emb 145 doors are interchangeable and some are not. Maintenance was dispatched to remove and replace doors in proper position (left hand/right hand side). Right side emergency exit could not be removed! After several exhaustive attempts; one of the mechanics climbed onto the wing to assist in the removal. The exits were clearly marked left/right on the frame of door. Our prior instruction was that the exits were interchangeable. This is not the case on certain aircraft. Prevention: after correct installation test the installation for ease of removal! Also; advise all emb 145 operators of possible emergency exit failure if not carefully placed in position indicated and checked for ease of removal. Any restrictions from adjacent panels should be repaired preventing further danger to passengers.

Title: EMB145 Flight Crew was informed by an Inspector after landing that the right hand emergency exit door had a placard stating it belonged on the left side of the aircraft; and the left hand placard stating that door belonged on the right side. Maintenance corrected the situation but encountered great difficulty removing the right exit.
