Narrative:
On the VOR/DME GPS runway 36L approach to new orleans; la (new) the step down altitude between cupro and imial is 680 feet MSL. We went below this altitude on the approach to new. The controller gave us an altitude alert. On the approach the FMS did not have imial in the data base; but is on the approach plate. The co-pilot was to set the altitude on each step down fix. After we passed cudro (FAF); he gave me and set the MDA altitude of 480 feet MSL not the step down fix at this point; so I was descending to MDA 480 feet MSL not the 680 feet MSL step down fix altitude.
